KARACHI: More than 1.6 million people have been waiting for license plates for their cars and motorbikes since 2016, according to a report submitted to the provincial ombudsman on Wednesday.

Of 1.6 million license plates, no less than 1.34 million were for two-wheelers and around 300,000 for four-wheelers, including commercial and non-commercial vehicles.

On March 8, the Sindh Ombudsman, Aijaz Ali Khan, learned suo motu of a report by Dawn regarding the non-issuance of more than 300,000 license plates since 2016 despite payment of required fees submitted to the department. excise and taxes.

The ombudsman had directed the secretary of excise and taxation to submit a full report through his director of motor vehicle registration on Wednesday.

Sources said the ombudsman’s office had asked the excise department for details of the year of the pending license plates, data on the districts and what action or policy had been made by the Sindh government for issuance. fast pending license plates.

He also asked for a timetable for the elimination of the backlog of license plates.

On Wednesday, excise officials filed a response, but the ombudsman was unhappy with it because it lacked the district-by-district data and policy to clear the backlog.
