Christmas Day crashes: serious injuries after motorcycle collision in Waikato, Otago car-to-truck crash shuts down SH1

Two people died as a result of serious accidents in the Waikato and Otago areas on Christmas morning.

At around 9:20 a.m., a motorcycle crashed in the rural town of Waikato, Gordonton, seriously injuring the rider.

In an update on Saturday afternoon, a police spokesperson confirmed the motorcyclist died at the scene.

“One person has died as a result of the serious motorcycle accident at the intersection of Broadley Downs and Gordonton Rd,” the spokesperson said.

The road, which had been closed following the accident, has since reopened.

Meanwhile, another person has died as a result of a car and truck collision on State Highway 1 in Waihola.

The Taieri Plains Highway / State Highway 1 – located between Dunedin and Milton – was closed after the crash, which occurred just north of the Titri Rd intersection at around 9:15 a.m.

In an update, police confirmed that the driver of the vehicle had died.

“One person died as a result of the serious car and truck accident on the SH1 / Taieri Plains, Waihola highway,” the spokesperson said.

“The driver of the car died instantly.”

Diversions remain in place at each end of Titri Rd and motorists are advised to avoid using the national road if possible.
