This Ford V6-powered Datsun 510 is a killer weirdo
We’ve all been there. You sit around the bench and run beers with your friends, watching a a handful of cars that just don’t run and randomly strewn engines and transmissions and an idea comes to your mind. Your brain becomes this Patrick Star meme; What if we take this Ford V6 and push it in this Datsun 510 and go racing? Yes! What if?
There isn’t a lot of information about the creation of this car, but I imagine that must have been what was going on. I’m just surprised there is enough beer in the store to get past the point of no return before sobering up. The list doesn’t say so, but it looks like a Ford 4-liter V6 mated to a 3-speed C4 automatic that was dropped somewhere in the middle of a Datsun. It’s such a bad idea that I love it unconditionally.
What we have here is a 1969 Datsun five and ten two-door sedan, which was already quite a popular chassis for vintage racing and the like, as it raced during the period, is relatively light and incredibly straightforward. The 510 was one of the first truly successful Japanese imports in American motorsport, and this has helped to build the legacy of the Nissan brand that exists today.
The 510 originally came with a variety of small inline four-cylinder engines, the most common of which was a 73-horsepower 1.5-liter. Obviously that’s not enough for a race car, so this manufacturer went to put a Ford 6 under the hood. The most readily available Ford V6 is the Cologne V6 which came in 4-liter form in a whole bunch of cars, including Ranger, Explorer, and Aerostar vans, so aftermarket parts and engines would be super easy. to be found, and they came with 160 horsepower, more than double the original block of the 510. And based on the car’s limited description, it looks like this engine has been seriously modified.

This is clearly designed for E-modified autocross, but also not in the full scope of the rulebook. It might do the trick regionally, but if he were to show up to the nationals he would have to face some monsters. as Austin-Healey, Jeff Kiesel’s multiple wild champion. With a heavy drivetrain like the Cologne V6 and C4 automatic, that doesn’t stand a chance. Wwithout massive aerodynamics and much more dedication to weight reduction, that would be a back-of-the-packer. That’s not to say it’s not fun smoking tires!
The asking price is close to twenty thousand dollars, and there are much worse things you could buy with that kind of money. I mean, there are a lot better things too, but everyone has their thing, you know? With a supertrapp muffler on a Ford V6 built I’m sure that sounds like crap, but man, it’s probably fun for a Saturday morning spent fucking cones.
